Empowering Teachers and Students to Support Hikikomori Reintegration
An innovative Erasmus+ KA2 project
The project
RECONNECT is an innovative Erasmus+ KA2 project that aims at improving the competences of teachers and other school professionals to better support the social and school reintegration of hikikomori and adolescents at risk of social withdrawal (final beneficiaries), thus preventing their early school leaving. This will be achieved through specialized training, targeted and gamified tools and the involvement of peer adolescents to support the reintegration process, fostering a more inclusive and supportive school environment
Objectives
The RECONNECT project aims to generate a concrete and lasting impact on the school community, achieving the following results

Providing support to students aged 14-19 with hikikomori syndrome
Creating a network among teachers/school professionals, families and peers to support them into their social isolation and to guide them to a gradual re-integration in school and social life, thus preventing them from school dropouts

Fostering a positive and inclusive school environment
Supporting mental health and wellbeing of all students, providing teachers and adolescents with the right knowledge to be supportive with their peers experiencing social difficulties, especially those with hikikomori syndrome and at risk of social withdrawal.

Supporting teachers in their continuous professional development
Providing teachers with theoretical knowledge and higher competences to recognize early signs of social isolation among students and to implement tailored intervention programmes with a whole-school approach.
Project outputs
TEACHERS TRAINING CURRICULUM
A course divided into different modules aimed at providing teachers and school professionals with in-depth knowledge on Hikikomori syndrome and high competences to cope with it
PEER ADOLESCENTS TRAINING CURRICULUM
A course to make adolescents able to help their peers with social issues and act as first sentinels to intervene promptly in case of early symptoms of the disorder
ONLINE GAME PLATFORM FOR TEACHERS/EDUCATORS AND ADOLESCENTS IN SOCIAL WITHDRAWAL
Hikikomori syndrome, which is closely related to excessive Internet use, can be addressed through gamified tools that engage individuals at their own pace, reducing social pressure. The project aims to create an online game platform for hikikomori and teachers, integrating game-based learning and the EU Digital Decade strategy, with the ultimate goal of guiding adolescents back into society with professional support
